One of their primary functions is to carry equipment and supplies to offshore drilling rigs and production platforms. This includes essential materials such as drilling tools, spare parts, and various supplies necessary for day-to-day operations in maritime environments.

The design and capabilities of OSVs, such as their large cargo holds and ability to withstand harsh sea conditions, make them particularly suited for this purpose. They are equipped with specialized handling systems to load and unload equipment safely and efficiently.

While other options, such as catering to crew accommodation needs or engaging in international shipping, can be associated with maritime activities, they do not encapsulate the primary task of OSVs.
